Summer Silva
Coach Summer Silva began her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2005 at Aloisio Silva BJJ in Lawndale, California. What started as a search for self-defense quickly became a lifelong passion. Encouraged by her cousin, who had trained in BJJ combatives in the military, Summer gave Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a try. From her very first roll, she was hooked. What began as a curiosity quickly became a passion.
Just two months into her training, Summer entered her first tournament. She wasn’t just participating—she was discovering the heart of what would become a lifelong journey. From that moment on, her dedication only deepened. With each competition, each class, and each challenge, she grew stronger and more skilled.
Over the years, Coach Summer’s list of accomplishments grew impressively. She earned titles at the SJJIF Worlds—both in her weight class and the open division—conquered the North American Tournament, All American Championships, Arizona State, and many others. But like any true journey, hers wasn’t without its hurdles. Summer faced injuries, balanced the demands of school and work, and embraced the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood. Through it all, she remained unwavering in her commitment to improve every single day.
In 2014, her impact extended beyond the mats. Summer took on a pivotal leadership role as the General Secretary of the SJJIF. She was instrumental in establishing the organization's nonprofit structure, crafting its bylaws, and laying the foundation for its growth. Her vision and dedication have been key in pushing BJJ toward Olympic recognition, and the global BJJ community continues to benefit from her tireless efforts.
Even with her administrative responsibilities, Summer never stopped training and teaching. On the mats, she evolved into a coach with a deep passion for nurturing the next generation. Teaching kids became a cornerstone of her mission—watching young students rise to challenges and grow both on and off the mats filled her with purpose. She also dedicated herself to empowering women through her BJJ self-defense programs, helping others find the strength and confidence she once sought.
Today, Coach Summer Silva is a 2nd-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Beyond the gi, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, is a licensed school teacher, and a certified behaviorist in speech and development. She brings all of her experience, wisdom, and heart into her coaching—motivating, guiding, and connecting with her students in ways that go far beyond technique.
Coach Summer isn’t just a BJJ instructor—she’s a mentor, a leader, and a force of inspiration. Her journey continues, and through her, so do the dreams of many others.
